Holyhead pupils ride into confidence with Bikeability training

Year 5 pupils at Holyhead Primary Academy swapped the classroom for their bikes as they took part in Bikeability training, developing essential cycling skills, building confidence and learning how to stay safe on the road.

Through a series of practical sessions, pupils developed their bike control, strengthened their understanding of road safety and learned how to make responsible decisions when cycling. The training gave children the opportunity to put their learning into practice and develop their confidence as young cyclists.

Delivered by qualified cycling instructors, the sessions provided a hands-on learning experience for pupils of all abilities. Some children learned to ride for the first time, while more experienced cyclists built on their existing skills and practised riding safely on the roadside.

Learning to cycle brings a range of benefits for children. As well as supporting fitness and physical health, it can help children develop healthy habits, confidence and independence. Cycling also provides opportunities to develop social skills as pupils work together, support one another and celebrate their achievements.

Since its launch in 2007, Bikeability has trained more than five million children across England. Funded by Active Travel and administered by the Bikeability Trust, the programme is delivered through local councils, partners, and schools across the country.

Natalie Shipley, Principal at Holyhead Primary Academy, said: “Bikeability is a great opportunity for our children to develop skills that will support them both in and out of school. As well as learning how to cycle safely, they are building confidence, independence and the ability to make responsible choices for themselves.

“We want our children to be active, healthy and confident in the world around them, and opportunities like this are an important part of that. It’s wonderful to see them challenging themselves, persevering when things are difficult and taking pride in what they can achieve.”

For many children, being able to cycle safely opens up new opportunities to be active, spend time outdoors and travel more independently. By giving pupils the skills and confidence to make cycling part of everyday life, Bikeability provides learning that can continue to benefit them well beyond their time at primary school.
