Year four pupils at Holyhead Primary Academy took part in an educational visit to Birmingham’s Islamic Experience Exhibition.
The exhibition, opened in 2003 and visited by more than 150,000 people, was created to support schools, colleges and community organisations by offering a thoughtful introduction to Islamic beliefs and traditions.
During the visit, pupils explored the exhibition’s themed galleries, which centred on the five pillars of Islam and provided an engaging introduction that encouraged open questioning and discussion.
Learners explored a range of themes, including faith and history, which highlighted the shared roots and values found within Islamic teaching, as well as family life, Islam and science, and an overview of the key principals upon which Islam is built.
Pupils took part in a question-and-answer session after the exhibition, where they asked thoughtful questions that deepened their understanding of Islam and the value of cultures and diversity within communities. Following the exhibition, pupils were able to try their hand at writing their names in Arabic, guided by tutors who explained the significance of their names and that of language in the Qu’ran.
Natalie Shipley, Principal at Holyhead Primary Academy, said: “Experiences like these deepen our pupils’ understanding of the world and help them recognise the richness of the communities they belong to.
“At Holyhead, our values are built around respect, inclusivity and kindness, and cultural visits play an important role in helping children see those values in action. When pupils learn about different faiths and traditions in a meaningful way they grow in confidence, empathy and appreciation for the diversity that strengthens both our school and the wider community.”
The visit formed part of Holyhead Primary’s commitment to broadening pupils’ horizons through real world learning that supports both their academic development and their social awareness.
